Following the death of President Idriss Déby on 20 April 2021, security forces have forcefully suppressed pro-democracy protesters and civil society organizations. Since 2019, Boko Haram and the ISWAP increasingly target civilians in the Lake Chad Basin. Chadian security forces also commit growing abuses against civilians in the Lake Chad region in the framework of counter-terrorism operations, and continuously oppress Southern populations. Deadly inter-communal conflicts between mainly non-Arab farmers and majoritarly Arab herders from the North are on the rise in the Eastern Ouaddai and Sila regions and the Southern Salamat Province.
