Details
Since Georgian independence from the USSR, Russia has supported the separatist regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in their autonomy from Georgia. Ethnic Georgians have faced forced expulsion and genocide in the region of Abkhazia and were the victims of war crimes during the 2008 Russo-Georgia War. Today, the Georgian government has effectively established a single-party state and consistently meets political protests with violence and repression.
