Details
After Muslim Séléka rebels took over the country following decades of marginalization, Christian anti-Balaka militias emerged in response and excessively targeted Muslim civilians. While militias on both sides have subjected civilians to human rights abuses during the past eight years, Muslims have been disproportionately targeted, with 80% of the Muslim population driven from the country. Fulani Muslims have been further targeted within the Muslim community. Since the December 2020 elections, Séléka and anti-Balaka groups have formed an unlikely alliance, the Coalition of Patriots for Change" (CPC), against the current government.
