The Refugee Law Project (RLP), School of Law, Makerere University, in collaboration with the African Transitional Justice Research Network (ATJRN), is now accepting applications to its 7th Institute for African Transitional Justice (IATJ) to be held from 19-23 June 2017, in Soroti, Eastern Uganda.
Under the theme: "Local Memories and National Truth: Active Remembering or Acts of Forgetting?", the 7th IATJ will confront and explore global experiences in relation to formal and informal truth-seeking processes after widespread atrocities and wartime abuses. Central is the juxtaposition of active remembering and acts of forgetting, with a particular interest to truth recovery in the absence of truth commissions.
The IATJ is an annual week-long residential programme designed to convene practitioners, activists, academics and policy makers in a multi- and cross-disciplinary space in which to discuss some of the most pressing transitional justice issues of our time; with a deliberate focus on situating discussions in a range of African contexts, it seeks to expand the global transitional justice discourse to accommodate a range of culturally and historically informed conceptions of justice, and to catalyze the development of African Transitional Justice systems and mechanisms.
