Germans aren’t aware of the scale of the problem, according to United Nations group.
People of African descent suffer widespread discrimination and racial profiling in Germany, a U.N. panel concluded Monday.
“The repeated denial that racial profiling does not exist in Germany by police authorities and the lack of an independent complaint mechanism at federal and state level fosters impunity,” said Ricardo Sunga, the leader of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent.
The working group visited multiple cities across Germany earlier this month to conduct the research, meeting human rights activists and government officials.
Last week, a German interior ministry report estimated there were nearly 10 attacks per day on migrants in 2016.
