Court of Genocide to Be Formed in Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has voiced its consent for forming a special court to investigate the genocide in the Kurdistan Region, said spokesperson for KRG Ministry of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs. The idea was proposed by the ministry, Fuad Osman told BasNews on Saturday, adding that a committee has been set up to study the details of forming the court according to the international standards. To form the court in Kurdistan, the official added, the committee will benefit from the experience of the countries which have already installed a court of genocide. Osman said the court will look into the cases of genocide, arranging the information in a way that could facilitate the introduction of the crimes worldwide. Late 1980s, the Iraqi government conducted a series of mass executions against the Kurdish people, known as Anfal. The process conducted in several phases within a few months claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Kurdish men, women and children who were either shot or buried alive in mass graves across the southern deserts of Iraq. On March 16, 1988, nearly 5000 civilians from the Kurdish town of Halabja died of a chemical bombing by Saddam Hussein's regime. More recently, as part of the Kurdish nation, thousands of Yezidi people in Nineveh province, living in Sinjar and its parish, faced agonizing massacres at the hands of the Islamic State (IS) militants. Some countries have recognized Halabja and Anfal as genocide but as for the Yezidi massacre, since the Iraqi government is not a member of the International Court of Justice in the Hague, the introduction of the crime globally seems more difficult.
