Ethnopolitics has become increasingly important in Kenya. The 2007 election was highly contested and led to deadly post-electoral ethnic violence. The 2017 elections were also disputed and followed by violence and a repeat election. The government and opposition have since negotiated a reconciliation process called the Building Bridges Initiative, which the Hight Court, however, has ruled is illegal. Meanwhile, Muslims have been unfairly targeted in couterterrorism operations. Indigenous groups and minorities also face ongoing issues with land rights, evictions, and harassment.
