In 2020, kidnappers dressed in police uniforms abducted five Garifuna men, who remain missing. Since 2009, hundreds of environmental activists have been murdered for their opposition to mines and other conservation efforts. Likewise, since the 2009 coup d'etat, members of the LGTBQ+ community, especially transgender people, have faced heightened persecution and even execution.
