Details
Since late president John Magufuli came to power in 2015, the government has cracked down on critics, political opponents, the press, and civil society. LGBTQI+ people face abuse, crackdowns, and severe jail terms. Sectarian violence sometimes occurs, and there are ongoing tensions between the mainland and Zanzibar. Different indigenous groups and minorities also face harassment, land-grabs, and even burning homes and killings. There are speculations human rights could improve following the recent death of Magufili and succession of President Samia Suluhu.
