Details
Early in the morning of July 7, an unidentified group of gunmen assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in his home. The assassination is a dramatic development in the ongoing political and economic crisis that has plagued Haiti this year.
Large-scale protests and opposition rallies have taken place across the since February 2021. Haitians are protesting the large-scale corruption and authoritarianism of the Moïse presidency, with the state often violently repressing these acts of dissent.
The recent assassination in Haiti also coincides with an increase in gang violence, a large-scale surge in COVID-19 cases, and an imminent hurricane season; all factors that could see the country spiral into further chaos.
