Details

Nigeria has three separate genocidal events taking place. Boko Haram has been kidnapping and attacking civilians, mainly in the Northeast, to pursue their mission of eliminating Western education and creating a fundamentalist Islamic state. Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) is a splinter group of Boko Haram with a similar ideology but is distinct from Boko Haram; conflicts between the two groups recently killed Abubakar Shekau, the former leader of Boko Haram. Additionally, Fulani Jihadist herders have been killing Christian farmers in the middle belt. The death penalty is also in place, though not currently enforced, for homosexuality in Northern Nigeria, while LGBTQIA+ people face persecution throughout the country.
