Cuba's long history of Spanish colonization culimated in three wars of independence rife with human rights abuses by colonial forces. Cuba's Communist one-party rule was founded after Fidel Castro's 1959 Cuban Revolution, and since then the country's population has been subjected to unchecked state repression. Dissidents, journalists, human rights groups, working unions, and other anti-government parties have been brutally repressed and detained by state forces. Protests are banned and communications technologies are subjected to extreme state control and blackouts during political crises.
