Détails

The Guatemalan civil war lasted from 1960 to 1996 and resulted in over 200 000 people killed, 80 percent of whom were Mayan. In a report published in 1999, the Guatemalan Commission for Historical Clarification has found that, between 1981 and 1983, the state  committed acts of genocide against the Mayan people. More than 20 years later, impunity remains rampant in the country. The government of Guatemala fails to bring the perpetrators of the genocide to justice and to protect indigenous and human rights defenders (Genocide Watch, 2020).
