Details
Disunity coupled with communalist violence have laid fertile grounds for a nation in which most of the main ethnic and religious groups face genocidal processes. Currently, Shi'ites, Yazidis and Christians are reeling from genocide faced under ISIS while Sunni Muslims suffer forced disappearences at the hands of Shi'ite militias. ISIS also enforced the death penalty for homosexuality until its official defeat in 2019. The persecution of LGBTQIA+ people and women in Iraq continues. Activist and journalist are at risk for violence from state security forces.
