Kyrgyzstan has seen three drastic revolutions in less than 20 years, all resulting in new forms of authoritarianism. Current President Sadyr Japarov has drastically increased his powers as president and reduced the influence of the legislative Supreme Council. 

Border demarcations are a major source of violence and discrimination for the country's ethnic Tajik and Uzbek minorities. Border conflicts occasionally flare up between Kyrgyzstan and neighboring Tajikistan as a result of Soviet-era border establishment issues. Women face discrimination in civil society and domestic violence in the home with little to no paths for recourse. "Bride kidnapping" (ala kachu) is a long-established custom in Kyrgyzstan and forced marriages are still arranged.
